ROSE AND BOBIK SHARE WINS AT WINTON
Porsche Staff Solutions International GT3 Cup Challenge Australia front-runners Kane Rose and Jeff Bobik shared race victories in the final day of Round 3 at Winton Motor Raceway, with Rose strengthening his series stronghold with the round triumph.
Rose started Sunday with Race 2 victory, claiming a lights-to-flag win over Brent Odgers and Philip Woodbury – a season-best result for the New South Welshman.
Behind Woodbury, 997 Cup Class leader John Modystach finished fourth ahead of hard charging Fraser Ross, who started at the rear of the field, from Michael Almond, John Goodacre, Adam Marjoram, John Morriss and Stephen Grove in 10th.
After victory in the first two Winton races, Rose’s luck changed at the start of the final race, spinning at the exit of Turn 2 after a slow start.
This allowed Odgers to then take the race lead, but he spun later in the opening lap, opening for door for Modystach to move into first position.
Modystach held the lead into the closing laps until Bobik claimed the front spot late in the race and ultimately race win, his second for the season after starting 11th on the grid.
Modystach and Almond rounded out the top three in the final race, promoting the duo to second and third in the Winton round points, ahead of Morriss and a fast finishing Rose, who recovered to place fifth, from Marjoram, Trende, Goodacre, Grove and Rob Knight in 10th.
While Bobik struggled early in the weekend, failing to finish Race 1 after contact with Morriss, the 2011 series runner-up was pleased to finish his weekend on a high note.
“The only good part of the weekend was Race 3 for us. I had a good start and got to where I wanted to be from 11th on the grid. I just waited until my car came good and then attacked,” said Bobik.
“It was a good race; I’m happy to get that win the after a shaky start to the weekend.”
Rose's round win extends his outright series lead to 49 points over Modystach, with Race 3 winner Bobik a further 40 points behind.
“It was a good round for us overall. We pulled a gap in the points which you’ve got to do in this championship. We got good points in the first two races and, while the third race didn’t go to plan, we still managed to get a few points out of it,” said Rose.
“I got an average start in Race 3; I bogged down at the start and I had to have another go at the clutch. A couple of cars went passed and then we got served on the second corner and had to come back from there.
“We haven’t been to the next two tracks at the championship so that will be interesting and a challenge at the same time. It’ll be good fun.”
The next round of the Porsche Staff Solutions International GT3 Cup Challenge Australia series will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park with the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships on July 13-15, 2012.
