Chaotic end to Swift Series

The Australian Swift Racing Series continued on their charge as part of Round 6 of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships this weekend, with race 2 and 3 on Sunday, and after an action packed opening to the meeting, it was assured to be a superb finish.

With race 2 following the traditional reverse grid format, it meant that the fast paced Mark Gibson was at the rear of the field for the start. The race 1 winner however was quick right from the beginning, managing to claim the lead by the exit of turn 1, being a true display of his experience and talent behind of the wheel of a Suzuki Swift. As the field began to spread out across the 3.1 km Sandown circuit, Rob Jarvis was forced into a drive through penalty after jumping the start. Mark Gibson eventually claimed the race win, from Morgan Haber who again had the quickest lap time in the race, from Allan Jarvis, Brooke Leech and Rob Jarvis.

With the final event for the Australian Swift Racing Series being delayed due to track repairs, the race was shortened to 6 laps, meaning it was going to be a sprint finish to end the 5th round of the series. Mark Gibson was again strong away from the line, jumping to the lead from Haber and Allan Jarvis. However, the start from Gibson was deemed to be at fault, forcing him into a drive through penalty. Brooke Leech was hot on the tail then of Haber and Jarvis. As the race progressed however, across one of the most challenging parts of the circuit at the rise before the famous 'Dandenong Road' corner, both Morgan Haber and Allan Jarvis were in a synchronised slide, but for Jarvis, contact with the grass subsequently cannoned his car into the Armco and rolled onto his roof. Despite being a truly spectacular accident, Allan was ok, walking away from the crash. This final was then declared a 'non-event', with points being awarded solely for race 1 and 2.

Kiwi teenager Mark Gibson then claimed the round, from Morgan Haber in 2nd and Allan Jarvis in 3rd. The remainder of the season's calendar will be clarified by category management and news will be available on the series website.
