Latest News

Mar 18, 2013

The 2013 Radical Australia Cup kicked off at last weekends Top Gear Festival Sydney, with a new multi-class format taking to Sydney Motorsport Parks new extended 4.5km circuit.

The one-make Sportscar category had a bumper grid of 29 cars – it’s largest yet in Australia - incorporating the 2.7L V8 powered SR8 RX models joining the more familiar 4 cylinder SR3 RS, which makes up the bulk of the grid. The category also now features rolling starts which added to the spectacle of a large grid amongst a 30,000 strong crowd  - all enjoying Radical’s involvement in the high publicity motor magazine festival.

The Radical Australia Cup is a CAMS sanctioned single marque race series, entering its third year in 2013 as a full scale, single make series. It was initiated in 2009 within a multi make series in NSW, before expanding interstate. In 2013 it will be run over six rounds with the season opener taking place as a showcase event at the Top Gear Festival Sydney, all other rounds part of the Shannons Nationals series.

The governance is based on the international rules and regulations adopted by Radical for various series throughout the world. Control tyres produced by Dunlop specifically for Radical Sportscars are compulsory along with fuel, lubricants and other aspects to ensure equality of cars & they cannot be modified in any way. A Driving Standards Officer & Eligibility Officer is engaged via CAMS to manage the category and liaise with event appointed Category Manager, CAMS Stewards & Judiciary personnel.

Radical Australia Cup Sydney Round 1 2013

2013 will see an expansion of the Radical Australia Cup to a multi class format with the Australian debut of the 430bhp SR8 RX model competing alongside the 260bhp SR3 RS, effectively offering 2 class champions & bringing the series into line with other major Radical categories worldwide -including the flagship Radical Euroseries. Watch for the SR8 RX cars on track, as they will be differentiated with a yellow fluro strip on mirrors & the rear wing section of the cars.

The series alternates between enduro (two sprints and one 50-minute race) and biduro (two 50-minute races) formats with each 50-minute race requiring a compulsory pit-stop & optional driver change. Aimed at gentlemen racers the series also provides a pro/am entry option, with professionals time penalised. Round 4 is set to see a new format for 2013 - The First Neon Radical 250 will see two back to back 50 minute stints with no compulsory pit stop - the first 50 minute stint will be followed by a 20 minute break for refuelling, before restarting under safety car conditions for the second, non stop 50 minute leg.

The 2013 series will be televised through the Shannons Nationals coverage on SBS Speedweek Channel on Sunday lunchtime, one - two weeks after each event. For the First Neon Radical 250 Endurance event an extended TV package is planned.

Championship prize for the 2013 winner will be a fully funded Radical UK Works Team race seat, in one round of the 2014 Radical European Masters series events in Europe. The SR3 and SR8 classes are run with 2 separate, parallel points systems - each offering a class championship. The outright 2013 Radical Australia Cup champion will be the driver with the most points accumulated in either the SR8 or SR3 classes – ensuring drivers with the existing SR3s will still have the opportunity to win the series overall & therefore prize, despite inevitably finishing second on the road.

Full series registration and entry fee's are combined and have been reduced for 2013 by 24%, over the 2012 series fee. Single round entries are also available, as are limited opportunities to hire race seats for pre-qualified competitors.

Radical Australia Cup - Masters Division

The 2013 Radical Australia Cup Masters will run again in 2013 as a sub category, running a championship point score in parallel. Geared towards the senior driver, the minimum age limit is 54 which translates to anyone born in 1959 or earlier. The higher age limit differentiates the Radical Masters division from other categories and offers an incentive for the more senior drivers to compete against one another.

Despite the age differences, experience sometimes counts & the Masters round winner was regularly placed on the outright podium in 2012.

Overview

CARS:

SR3 RS

A true ‘world’ supercar, the SR3 RS  is the world’s most

successful sports-racer & track day car, with over 800 satisfied customers globally. The SR3 RS is a sure-footed,

highly-developed racer, adept and rapid in the hands of both the novice trackday driver,

and seasoned racing professional.

> Engine: RPE-Suzuki 1500cc 4-cylinder 260bhp

> Weight: 570kg

> Top speed: 160mph

SR8 RX

A trackday and racing car like no other, the SR8 RX redefines the word performance and

has no equals. This is Radical’s ultimate racer, and it provides the definitive visceral driving

experience for over 200 owners globally. Physics-defying grip, relentless acceleration and

powerful brakes add up to a two-seater track car that can lap Sydney Motorsport Park in

the same time as a Formula 3 single seater and faster than a V8 Supercar.

> Engine: RPE 2700cc V8 430bhp

> Weight: 680kg

> Top speed: 178mph

> 0-60mph: 2.8 seconds

PERFORMANCE:

With around 250bhp (190Kw) and 170Nm of torque in a sub-500kg package, these twin-seater open cockpit projectiles have true racecar credibility and at a 10.500rpm rev-limit, they sound every bit as good as they look.
