Youlden and Caratti among Mallala Nationals winners
18/05/2008 at 9:22:25 AM:

Luke Youlden won the Clem Smith Cup for Sports Sedans and Nathan Caratti took the Australian Formula 3 Championship lead in Round Three of the 2008 Shannons Nationals at Mallala Motorsport Park in South Australia on 17-18 May.

Six categories headed to the Adelaide circuit, with the hearty crowd who braved some wild weather treated to exciting racing.

Youlden, who will line up for Ford Performance Racing in this year’s V8 Supercar endurance races, started his Kerrick Sports Sedan Series campaign in style, winning two races including the Clem Smith Cup behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang.

“We weren’t sure how the car would fare against the established guys when we brought it over from New Zealand, but it’s been a perfect weekend,” he said.

“Two race wins and a round win is a great start to the series, I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Six-time Australian champion Tony Ricciardello endured a problematic weekend in his Alfa Romeo, but fought back to win the final race ahead of Darren Hossack (Audi) and Youlden.

Driving for Adelaide-based Team BRM, Caratti was second in Race One and won Race Two of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship action, moving into the championship lead.

Leanne Tander was also in the winner’s circle, taking out the opening race and finishing second in Race Two after a late-race pass on Neil McFadyen.

“It’s nice to finally break though after probably having one of the fastest cars in the field since we won at Round One,” Caratti said.

”The results are great as they put us in a very good position in the championship.

“There’s a long way to go but it’s good to get the result here and set us up for a good second half of the season.”

The popular Tankworld Australian Supertruck Nationals turned on a typically-entertaining weekend of racing, with Steve Zammit taking the spoils in Round Two of their series.

Zammit won two of the four races and was second in the Superprix, won by Light Truck driver Steve Coulter, while local driver Bob Middleton maintains his series lead.

Keven Stoopman and Gavin Porteous split the Ironfarmers HQ National Series race wins, as V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris had a frustrating weekend with seventh in the opening race his best result.

South Australian drivers cleaned up in the debut of two new categories.

Adam Wallis (Holden Commodore VX) scored two race wins and the Shannons V8 Touring Car Series round win, with the other race win going to Chris Smerdon (Ford Falcon AU).

Graeme Cook won all three races in the inaugural Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge round, with Sven Burchartz and Anthony Kosseris second and third for the weekend.

Round Four of the Shannons Nationals will be held at Phillip Island Raceway in Victoria on 14-15 June.

Television broadcasts of this weekend’s racing at Mallala commence next Sunday, 25 May, on SBS’ Speedweek.
