Absence makes for a bigger lead

Kumho Tyres Australian Saloon Car Series leader Shawn Jamieson continued on his winning way in his Morphet Vale Garage Holden Commodore with three race wins at Mallala’s third round last weekend, June 5-6. In each race he beat his closest rival, 2008 series winner Steve Kwiatkowski while a fourth and two third place finishes earned Sam Milton third overall and best placed of the Ford Falcons.

Prior to the meeting Kwiatkowski sold his Westport Cars Falcon and drove Darryl Abbott’s Commodore (Kevin Weeke’s Supaloc car of last year) in a one-off deal. Since Kwiatkowski couldn’t add to his points scored so far and the other major contenders like Clint Harvey, Kris Walton, Rod Dawson, Tim Rowse and Simon Tabinor were no-shows, Jamieson sought out a major points haul. “I needed to make the most of this opportunity and I felt the car was good enough to do it,” he said.

Jamieson led the first of three races from lights to flag, hounded for the most part by Kwiatkowski who was troubled by gear selections, the changes to third. “We don’t have to worry about changing from second gear to third in the Fords,” he quipped, “and it’s a technical with this style of shifter that I have to get used to.”

Third place was keenly contested with Matt Davidson (Commodore) initially holding the final podium place before Milton found a way past. Later the two would clash at turn four with Milton rejoining at the back and Davidson losing spots to the Dan Gate and Geoff Brown Falcons. Next it was Gate who fell off the circuit with Brown in his newly built Ford third until Davidson – and later, Milton, slipped through. Brad Fox was also in the mix with these cars early on before an off track excursion at turn seven caused by brake failure put him out.

In the second race Jamieson led until a missed gear change out of the Southern Loop allowed the closely pursuing Kwiatkowski into the lead. But the latter was having rear braking issues – that is he had no rear pads – and couldn’t hold out Jamieson. Davidson again had third before Milton mounted a successful challenge, but did manage to hold off the advances of Gate. Brown was next, after a slow start had relegated him to last, beating home Brenton Burr (Falcon), Paul Pennisi and Naomi Maltby (Commodores).

In the third race Kwiatkowski upped his tyre pressures to gain better early race speed and was rewarded by taking the early lead. Jamieson hounded him until pulling off a braking manoeuvre at turn four on lap four. From there Jamieson had the pace to hold on for a narrow win. “With Shawn driving his own car, he knows the limits of what it can do and totally confident with what it can do,” reflected the defending champions.

Meanwhile Milton maintained third throughout. Davidson was fourth early but slipped down the order to finish behind Gate, Fox and Brown, and just held off Pennisi. Maltby was ninth while Burr was a mid race retiree.

Jamieson points haul gives him more than double the points of his nearest rival but there are still four rounds to go. “Yes there were some easy points to get here this weekend and it would have been very disappointing if I had not achieved that goal,” he said. “This car is nowhere near as stiff in its chassis as the one Steve is driving, and was due to be replaced last season – despite that its still quick.”
