Superkarts Go National at Morgan Park
5/08/2009 at 5:40:52 AM:

Queensland’s biggest Superkarting event joins the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships for the first time over the August 8-9 weekend. The Rockpress Pacific Superkart Challenge will be Superkart racing’s third appearance on the Shannons Nationals this year.

The Challenge will take place over five races at the ever expanding Morgan Park Raceway in the Darling Downs town of Warwick. The undulating layout has the unique in Australia distinction of a Superkart holding the outright lap record.

The Pacific Challenge features a class based points structure which allows a competitor to claim the title from any class. The 2007 event saw Sam Zavaglia win the title in his 125cc class Stockman-Honda, while 2005 was won by Rotax Max class racer Sarah Harley.

Warren McIlveen, aboard his Mac’s Marine/Soundy’s Retravision Stockman MR2 Honda, heads the entry list as the defending champion and holder of the Morgan Park outright lap record. McIlveen has had a character-building year of spins and mechanical issues, but his pace is as fast as ever after the seven-time Australian champion took Pole Position at Eastern Creek last month.

Of the Queensland based competitors, the two standouts are Vince Livaditis and Russell Jamieson. Jamieson, a former Australian champion in the 125cc class, made the switch to 250cc International this year aboard the Coach Design Stockman-Honda which has seen him score several top six finishes at national level. Livaditis has been the fastest driver in the Queensland Championship this year in his new Top Dog Advertising PVP. On his first interstate trip last month Livaditis diced with Jamieson for top ten positions, along with another racer in the Morgan Park Entry, the 1800 Bumper Stockman-Honda of Sydney-based racer Jason Laker.

A potential spoiler in the pack is leading 125cc class racer John Pellicano. The New South Welshman clawed his way into third position in the national title last month with a storming drive at Eastern Creek Raceway, and having raced at Morgan Park before will cut down the learning curve for this interstate racer.

The Challenge is supported this year by Rockpress. Rockpress is a manufacturer and fabricator for the transport and mining industries, but also boasts an expanded line in specialist motorsport application, with custom made brake rotors for Superkart and Formula Ford racing. Part of Rockpress’ support has allowed the event to secure television coverage as part of Shannons Nationals on the Speedweek program through national broadcaster SBS at a time to be determined. It will mark the first television appearance for Superkarts for three years.
