Second placed Salmon aiming to inch closer
9/08/2009 at 2:18:53 AM:

Two times Bathurst 12 Hour winner Rod Salmon is on course to narrow the gap to series leader Garry Holt after clinching pole position for race one of round three of the Boylan Traffic Solutions Australian Manufacturers Championship for Production Cars at Morgan Park in Queensland yesterday.

Driving the Ralliart prepared Smirk.com Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10, Salmon set a category benchmark time of 1 minute 8.4661 seconds around the new to the Shannons National 2.1 km tight rural layout to be just over two tenths of a second faster than Class A1 rival Lee Castle in the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru Impreza WRX. “We nearly as quick as the Lancer but I am confident we will race strong because we can those times in races,” Castle said.

Third fastest and leading Class A2 was Holt in the Eastern Creek Karting BMW 355i and he was marginally faster that Class B’s Jake Camilleri in his Grand Prix Mazda MPS 3 while the best of the local V8s was Tim Sipp aboard the GKS HSV Clubsport.

Second in Class B was Peter O’Donnell in the GWS Personnel BMW 135i who was sixth over all and ahead of the Osborne Motorsport team Toyota Celicas of Colin Osborne and Stuart Jones who were also vying for Class C honours.

Sipp’s running partner Gerald Keogh qualified ninth while tenth went to Chris Delfsma in the troubled Century 21 Ford Falcon GT which repeatedly blew fuses. The Falcon FG XR6 Turbo of Jeremy Gray was withdrawn after breaking its crankshaft in practice, and round Steve Glenney was a scratching due to business commitments.
