Supertrucks: Middleton narrowly on top at Mallala
30/10/2007 at 2:48:41 AM:

Bob Middleton and his CAT Freightliner narrowly came out on top of the Biodiesel SuperTruck Nationals round four events at Mallala on October 13-14 by taking two wins out of four starts and edging out the giant killing Isuzu SBR of NSW’s Steve Coulter and fellow South Australian John Bomberle in his Kenworth T900.

Series leader Middleton was comfortably ahead of Steve Zammit (Kenworth W925) in qualifying and swept to victory in the opening two races beating Zammit initially then running down and passing Coulter. Frank Amoroso (Kenworth W900) spun at turn two in race one and was collected by the Isuzu SBR of Stan Seton. Amoroso limped to the pits and Seton only completing three laps after repairs.

Ben Rose had switched with Col Lovett after Lovett had detonated the engine of his N12 Volvo in Saturday’s co-driver race, but the Volvo shattered a piston in race one putting both out for the weekend.

Bomberle seem to be getting quicker as the day wore on – even though his tyres were worn past their use by date. He won race three with Coulter third behind Daniel Bajema’s Kenworth and Middleton forging back to fifth after an off-track excursion. Zammit’s day looked to be over when he failed to finish in this race.

In the Superprix. Zammit had taken over the Diamond Reo of Robert O’Connor while Amoroso was out with a brake problem and Michael Seton (Isuzu SBR) was also not starting. Coulter took full advantage of the handicap start to sprint of into a strong lead while Bomberle, Middleton and Bajema weaved their way through the Light Trucks. Middleton was on the attack but Bomberle defended aggressively as Bajema looked on. The fierce battle for second allowed Coulter to maintain a buffer and take the win.

The Co-Driver wins fell to John Falk (Amoroso Kenworth) who stormed through from the back of the grid to win Saturday’s race while Rob Waters (Bajema Kenworth) took the Sunday race as his opposition fell by the wayside.
